The NEWFILES System
Copyright 1992 by Mark Herring
All Rights Reserved
The Newfiles system is designed to work with Sparkware's
Qmail DeLuxe² 1.26 offline mail reader or the 1stReader 1.02
offline mail system.
Newfiles lets you tag files stored in the new files lists
that can be included inside mail packets created by
Sparkware's Qmail Door 4.00 system. These tagged file
requests are then automatically moved back to The Qmail Door
where the files are included in the next mail packet you
download.
Please note that Newfiles will only work with packets created
by The Qmail Door. Your sysop needs to be using Qmail Door
4.00ß released on or after November 11th, 1992 *and* also
have installed the QM-FILE system on the BBS. You can tell
if the Qmail Door you use supports this system by looking for
a file named "DOOR.ID" inside your QWK packets. If this file
is found it must contain the entry:
REQUEST = SPARKWARE
inside the file. Otherwise, NEWFILES.EXE displays the new
files list as a standard text file.
Using Newfiles
--------------
Once you are inside the Newfiles program you will see a list
of new files on your screen. Each file has a letter besides
the filename. All files are sorted in order alphabetically
by filename.
You can use the cursor keys on your keypad to move around the
files listing. If you are using a mouse then cursor keys are
provided for you on the lower right section of the screen.
You can click on these buttons to go to the TOP of the file
listing, the END (or bottom) of the file list, or move one
page UP or DOWN in the listing.
If you wish to tag the file for downloading all you need to
do is press the letter associated with the filename. If the
letter blinks then that filename has been tagged for
downloading. If the letter changes from blinking to a solid
color then the file is 'untagged'. If you are using a mouse
you can tag (or untag) a file simply by clicking the left
button while the mouse cursor is on the file description.
When you tag files for downloading your request is included
inside the .REP mail packet. In order to receive your tagged
files you must upload your REP mail packet to The Qmail Door
*first* and then immediately download a new QWK mail packet.
Your tagged files will be included inside the QWK packet.
Change views
------------
If you press the '2' key on your keyboard (or click on the
'Change views' button with your mouse) you can change the
file views on the screen. These views rotate, in order, from
one view to the next. The views will then repeat themselves.
Four views are provided by Newfiles:
■ "All files" This view shows all files
included in the mail packet.
■ "Tagged files" This view shows all files
you have tagged for downloading. You will
only see this view if you have tagged files
for downloading.
■ "Zippy files" This view shows files that
meet your last 'ZIPPY' search (see 'Zippy
search' for more information). You will only
see this view if you have performed a zippy
scan.
■ "File counts" This view shows you how many
files were found in each conference.
Find filename
-------------
The FIND command lets you quickly find a filename. If you
want to find the first file that begins with "M" you should
enter "M" as the filename. Unlike the ZIPPY command, FIND
will only match a filename, not a file description.
Zippy search
------------
The ZIPPY command finds files that contain a keyword in
either the filename or file description. When Newfiles
displays files found in the ZIPPY scan the keywords will
blink on the screen.
You can use the Zippy command to find any text you desire.
For example, you can locate all of the files that contain
the keyword "QWK".
Zippy can also be used to find all of the files in just one
conference. Use the keyword "Conf #xxx" where "xxx" is the
conference number.
Quit
----
The QUIT command exits the Newfiles program and will return
control back to your offline mail reader. If you have tagged
any files while in Newfiles (or have previously tagged files
still available) then you will be asked if you wish to save
your changes.
If you select the "YES" button then the changes are saved to
disk. The next time you call a Qmail Door 4.00 system that
is setup for file requests your requests will be passed up to
the door.
If you select the "NO" button then the changes are discarded.
Special keys
------------
While you are viewing the new files list inside Newfiles, you
can press the F2 key to view the file list in it's 'normal'
text file view. The F5 key will also let you shell to DOS
while inside Newfiles.
NEWFILES.CFG and NEWFILES.IN
----------------------------
NEWFILES.CFG (for Qmail DeLuxe²) or NEWFILES.IN (for 1stReader)
is used by Newfiles to locate the subdirectories used by your
reader. You do not need to change the information in these
files in order to use Newfiles. However, if you wish, you can
edit this file. Here is a brief description of each line in
the configuration file:
Line #1 Path to the reader system subdirectory
This entry points to the 'home' subdirectory for
your offline mail reader.
Line #2 Path to the work subdirectory
This entry points to the location of your
reader's 'work' subdirectory. This is where your
mail reader unpacks mail packets.
Line #3 Path to the replies subdirectory
This entry points to the subdirectory where your
offline mail reader stores files that are bundled
into your .REP mail packet.
Line #4 Path to the BBS subdirectory
Qmail DeLuxe² does not keep a 'BBS' subdirectory
for its systems. 1stReader does use a BBS
subdirectory tree and this entry points to that
location.
Line #5 Name of the BBS ID
This is the name of the MAIL packet ID used to
create the QWK mail packet. For example, if the
mail packet is named "SPARKY.QWK" then this field
contains SPARKY.
If this field is left blank then Newfiles reads
this information from CONTROL.DAT.
Line #6 Name of the BBS system
This is the name of the BBS system. If this field
is left blank then Newfiles reads this information
from CONTROL.DAT.
Line #7 "-1" if color otherwise "0" or blank for monochrome
This line determines if Newfiles is displayed in
color or 'black and white' mode. If you place a
question mark in this field then Newfiles checks
to see what type of monitor you are using.
Line #8 "-1" if you want to use a mouse, "0" or blank to
turn off the mouse.
If you place a question mark in this field then
Newfiles checks to see if you have a mouse
installed on your system.
